Update: 2019 BMW M5 Competition breaks cover
BMW has finally revealed the all-new, 6th generation M5. The latest model is the most powerful M5 ever and feature all-wheel drive for the first time. You will able to experience the new M5 virtually in the upcoming Need For Speed -Payback.
Design
The new BMW M5 is based on the latest 5 Series. Hence, the styling is similar to the base car except for a few changes that are specific to the M5. For instance, the front fascia looks more aggressive with the blacked-out grille and the restyled bumper. The air-breather has been placed just under the shoulder line. BMW has employed a carbon fiber roof and a lithium ion battery to save weight.
Sporty tweaks to the rear bumper are quite evident with integrated diffuser and quad-exhaust tips. Although, the interior is based on the new 5 Series, there are subtle differences. The M-buttons on the steering wheel are now marked in a bright red and so is the engine start/stop button. The gear lever is also unique to the M5.
Engine and drivetrain
Under the skin, the new M5 boasts a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out no less than 592 hp @ 5600 rpm and 553 lb-ft @ 1800-5600 rpm. It comes with three driving modes: Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus. The new model is slightly larger in proportions compared to the standard 5 Series. Also, it is heavier than the outgoing M5.
But, thanks to the xDrive all-wheel drive traction, the M5 sprints from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 sec. Top speed is electronically pegged at 155 mph, which can be raised to 190 mph by opting for the Driver’s Package. Compared to the previous M5, overall length has gone up by 18 mm, front track has increased by 26 mm, while rear track has reduced by 2 mm.
It uses a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension. Suspension is further stiffened using an additional aluminum brace and transverse struts. The car rides on 19-inch rims shod with 275/40 front and 285/40 rear tires in standard trim. The optional 20-inch alloys come wrapped in 275/35 and 285/35 tires in the front and rear respectively.
Price
The 2018 BMW M5 will go on sale early next year with prices starting at around $115,000.
