Lamborghini has just unveiled the very first rear-wheel-drive only iteration of the new Huracan. It comes in the form of the Lamborghini Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo race car which replaces the old Gallardo at the Blancpain one-make racing series. Now, according to Autocar, the Italian car maker is planning to offer a lightweight rear-wheel-drive version of the Huracan to its customers as well.
In the past, Lamborghini did offer a similar lightened version of the Gallardo at a cut price. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Balboni and the hardcore Superleggera was offered without the bulky all-wheel drive system. The experiment was successful as many purists preferred the more nimble Gallardo over the all-wheel drive model.
The new Lamborghini Huracan is lighter and quicker than the old girl and would certainly benefit from a rear-wheel drive setup. With the all-wheel drive system dumped, the resulting Huracan will have to prove its might against the extremely agile Ferrari 458 Italia. As far as the 5.2-liter V10 engine is concerned, the output and performance would remain about the same, except for 0-60 sprint times which could vary slightly due to low grip levels.
