Lightweight, Track-Focused Ford GT Competition Series Launched

Ford is celebrating its recent Daytona 24 Hours victory with a limited-edition model of the new Ford GT. It is called the Ford GT Competition Series.

Raj Nair, Ford’s Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer said, “The Ford GT has racing in its blood. The Competition Series was developed with the most hardcore track enthusiasts in mind, providing a tailored set of lightweight features and unique livery to match.”

Carbon is the name of the game

What do you need to excel on a racetrack? It seems, Ford has figured out very well. The Ford GT has been winning races since its return to endurance racing in 2016. The Ford GT went on to win Le Mans after a gap of 50 years.

They kicked off the 2017 season with a win at the Daytona 24 Hours race. The Ford GT Competition Series is built to commemorate that win and much like the race car, it’s built for the racetrack.

Carbon fiber has been used sparingly to reduce overall weight even further. Meanwhile, you don’t get luxuries like air-conditioning, radio, stowage bins or even cup-holders. The cabin lined with sporty Alcantara. There’s exposed carbon everywhere and red shift paddles.

The engine cover has been replaced with a sheet of perspex. The A-pillar is crafted out of carbon fiber and so are the rear view mirrors. Even the wheels are one-piece carbon fiber and are bolted using lightweight titanium lug nuts. The Ford GT Competition Series also gets a lightweight exhaust system.

Ford claims, the weight savings have reduced the center of gravity. Thus, improving handling and performance. On the outside, the Competition Series gets racing stripes made out of strips of carbon with six different exterior color options.

At the heart of every Ford GT Competition Series is the same 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine producing 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque.

Ford has not released any performance date of the limited edition supercar neither have they disclosed the price.
