2019 BMW M5 Competition breaks covers

The new BMW M5 Competition packs in extra power and retuned suspension for even better performance over the regular M5.

It seems that the folks at BMW are still not done with the new M5. Finding some more scope with the model, the Bavaria-based manufacturer has lifted off the covers from the all-new M5 Competition. The new “Competition” suffix suggests that this new variant of the M5 comes with added zest over the regular M5. Priced at $110,995, the new BMW M5 Competition will hit the showroom floors in July.

The new BMW M5 Competition shares its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with the regular M5, however, the maximum power output has risen from 600 hp to 625 hp. Though, the peak torque output remains the same at 553 lb-ft. This bump in power implies to better performance numbers, with the BMW M5 Competition doing the 0-62 mph sprint in 3.3 seconds (0.1 second quicker than regular M5) and 0-124 mph sprint in 10.8 seconds (0.3 seconds quicker than regular M5). The eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased all-wheel drive system have been lifted off from the regular M5.

Along with the engine, BMW has also worked on the chassis and suspension setup. The engine comes bolstered with new special engine mounts which have an increased spring rate for better response from both engine and transmission. The ride height sees an increase of 7 mm over the regular M5, thanks to the use of toe links with ball joints in place of rubber mounts, which results in better wheel guidance at the rear. The BMW M5 Competition comes with 10 percent stiffer springs, firmer rear anti-roll bar, tweaked dampers and enhanced settings for Sport Plus drive mode.

Apart from these subtle mechanical changes, the list of cosmetic add-ons on the BMW M5 Competition include high-gloss black accents on the grille, rear bumper and mirror caps, ‘Competition’ badges at places, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, a new sports exhaust system with more pronounced growl and “M5” logo embossed on seat belts and floor mats.
