The McLaren 720S-based test mule does have a hybrid heart, however it isn’t the next-generation Sports Series model.
Earlier this month, a McLaren 720S prototype was spotted testing. The car was wrapped in camouflage and was sporting “Hybrid Prototype” stickers one the side skirts. It didn’t take long for the news to spread as everyone started speculating about a hybrid successor to the 720S. Apparently, it’s not we think.
Just as the first images surfaced online, we reached out to our sources close to McLaren to find out more about this hybrid prototype. Well, we have been told that these prototypes are actually testing the powertrain for the McLaren Speedtail. The orange decal on the windshield that reads “MVY04-BP23” further cements this fact.
That said, McLaren does intend to replace its current Sport Series range with hybrid models. Reports suggest that these could be powered by a V6 hybrid instead of the twin-turbo V8 engine that is currently offered on the 720S.
McLaren’s arch rival Ferrari are also working on multiple hybrid models, the latest being the “Big Brother” that is expected to be unveiled later this month.
