McLaren Speedtail costing $2.2 Million Catches Fire

Trust me, the last thing you want to see today is a $2.2 million McLaren Speedtail catching fire.

That’s exactly what happened to the silver McLaren Speedtail prototype seen in this video. While we don’t have the exact details of the incident, it appears to be a UK registered car. So, we are guessing this happened somewhere in the UK. The video shows a man putting out what seems to be an engine bay fire with an extinguisher. The white smoke is clearly visible in the video. Later, you see the dry powder being sprayed on to the car.

Here’s what a McLaren spokesperson said after the incident:

“A prototype version of the McLaren Speedtail experienced what we believe at this stage to be an electrical fault, whilst stationary at a fuel station near Guildford in Surrey, UK. As a precautionary measure, having seen a small amount of smoke emanating from the vehicle, McLaren employees moved the car away from the fuel pumps and discharged dry powder extinguishers over the rear of the car. The prototype was subsequently recovered to McLaren premises and investigations into the cause of the issue have commenced.”

The McLaren Speedtail is the successor to the McLaren F1. It features a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain having a combined output of 1036 hp. McLaren claims that the Speedtail will hit a top speed of 250 mph. That is, if it doesn’t instantly combust like this one here.

This is the first reported fire incident involving the new Speedtail. However, another limited edition McLaren recently met a similar fate. Salomondrin’s McLaren Senna was completely destroyed by an engine-bay fire on New Year’s eve. You can read more about it by clicking on the link.
