It looks like the end of the road for AMG’s fire-breathing V8 engine and the Mercedes-AMG C63 could be the first to drop it.
According to Autocar, the next generation Mercedes-AMG C63 is likely to swap its V8 engine for a 4-cylinder hybrid unit. It will be the first AMG model to get an electrified powertrain and is expected to be launched sometime in 2022.
The new AMG C63 is expected to use the 2.0-liter M139 4-pot that powers the A45 hatchback, which is likely to be equipped with a 48V integrated starter motor. Despite being half the size of the current V8 engine, the 2.0-liter hybrid is rumored to produce 503 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. While we are glad that it would pack performance worthy of the AMG badge, the throaty V8 exhaust note will be sorely missed. The C63 could get a 9-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.
Until then, the Mercedes-AMG C63 will continue to be offered with a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine. In base trim, this engine produces 469 hp and 479 lb-ft, while the C63 S gets the 503 hp version that churns out 516 lb-ft of torque. The claimed 0-60 mph time is 3.7 seconds and according to Mercedes, it will hit 180 mph.
