Rolls Royce Motor Cars is taking the next step in the evolution of their ultra-luxury products. The company is now working on an aluminium-intensive spaceframe architecture that will underpin all future Rolls Royce models. Starting with the Phantom, the lightweight chassis will form the basis of the upcoming SUV as well as the next-generation Rolls Royce Ghost.
This was revealed by Rolls Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös. “It is time to take the next step in the luxury journey. This is why I am announcing today that on-road testing of our all-new proprietary architecture is beginning. This new architecture of pure luxury represents considerable investment in the future of our great brand,” he added.
That’s not it. Rolls Royce in a bid to discourage spy photographers has released an official image of the 2018 Phantom prototype wrapped in camouflage. It’s certainly a novel idea, however as this marks the beginning of long test program we will definitely see more images of the new car released by “unofficial” sources.
The 2018 Rolls Royce Phantom will be much lighter than the current model. Same will be true with the Ghost which is based on last-gen BMW 7-Series. A lightweight chassis will be essential for the upcoming SUV as well which is still at least 4 years away.
