The Porsche 911 GT1 is one of the most iconic homologation specials from the 90s. It’s also extremely rare as just 23 of the street versions “Straßenversion ” were built. In this video, the experts at DK Engineering take us through some of the little known details of the 911 GT1.
The 911 GT1 was based on the 962 chassis. The first two cars featured the 993-spec round headlamps, while the rest had the 996-spec front fascia. The car featured in this video is the latter.
The car is powered by a 3.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, flat-6 that pumps out 536 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. While it may not seem a lot compared to modern standards, consider the fact that this car weighs just a shade over 1.1 tonnes.
The mid-mounted engine is bolted to a 6-speed manual gearbox that drivers the rear wheels. According to Porsche, 0-62 mph comes up in 3.9 seconds and the car will keep on accelerating till 191 mph.
Back in the day, this car would’ve cost about $912,000. Given its on-track success and rarity, prices of the 911 GT1 Straßenversion have skyrocketed. In 2017, one of these was auctioned for a record $5.66 million.
