Chris Harris loves Porsches and that’s a well known fact. He also fancies the new Porsche Cayman GT4 and that isn’t a surprise. It is one of the latest high performance sports cars in Porsche’s line up and sits at the top of the Cayman range. It is also the entry level track-ready sports coupe- much like a smaller, cheaper GT3. Based around an extremely capable chassis and a mid-engine layout, the Cayman GT4 should offer close to GT3 levels of fun for much less money. But does it?
Chris Harris went to Portimao to find out how good the Cayman GT4 really is. So, if you want to slide around endlessly this Porsche will keep you entertained. That’s because it has got an electronic locking rear differential, an almost perfect weight distribution and race-bred suspension. The gubbins at the front are from the GT3 while the rear setup is all new. It also allows numerous suspension and aero tweaking options to keep the occasional track day racer happy.
At its heart is a 385 hp flat-six cylinder engine from the 911 Carrera S model. Porsche offers carbon ceramic brakes on the GT4 which do come handy on a race track like Portimao. The interior is quite sporty and you do get optional carbon fiber seats. However, the biggest news is that Porsche have stuck to a conventional stick shift and three pedals.
