Not everyone can afford a standalone track car. That’s where cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 or the Ariel Atom come in. They fill the gap between the outright racing cars and the softy sprung, comfortable road cars. EVO went on the lookout for the best road-track combo that’s available in the market today.
Starting with the cheapest of the lot, the test progresses towards the most insane and insanely priced race cars. At the top of the food chain is the Mclaren 650S GT3, which frankly, isn’t a multi-purpose supercar for the road as well as for the track. The puny Caterham 160 on the other hand, with its 80 hp engine is a great track day toy but lacks a bit on the excitement factor. The Porsche 911 GT3 with bucket loads of technology does come close to being the most exciting on the track and pips its rival- Nissan GTR NISMO to secure a quick time around the race track.
While, the 1960s classic Le Mans race replica is a hoot to drive and perhaps provides the base near-race experience of all the nominees for the “Track Car of the Year” award. But, there’s this tiny company from rural England that makes a car called the Ariel Atom that’s supercharged and gets no comfort features whatsoever. This is a car that could take away the honors.
