Ferrari is on track to launch five cars this year; six if you include the recently unveiled P80/C one-off. The F8 Tributo broke cover at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month and we are waiting in anticipation for the “big brother” – a mid-engine supercar that shall be released in May 2019. A Portofino coupe and F8 Spider will soon follow and Ferrari will conclude its 2019 launch spree with the 812 Spider.
We were very skeptical of the possibility of an 812 Spider happening considering the 812’s predecessor, the F12 Berlinetta didn’t receive an open-top version. But, according to our sources, an 812 Spider is indeed happening and it won’t be a limited edition model but instead a regular production one. Sources tell us that the car’s launch was originally planned for the Monterey Car Week in August but it could be preponed to July or might be put off until November 2019.
The 812 Spider will be propelled by the same 6.5-liter V12 that powers the coupe. It produces 789 hp and 530 lb-ft of torque. The 812 Superfast has a top speed of 211 mph and a 0–62 mph time of 2.9 seconds. The open-top could be a little slower due to the added weight of the roof system. Speaking of the roof mechanism, Ferrari will probably go with a Portofino like hardtop instead of a soft-top. Pricing will naturally be a little higher than the coupe which starts at $363,000.
In any case, a modern series production front engine Ferrari is coming and if it looks anything like the above rendering, we are very much excited for it.
