The McLaren Speedtail may not be competing for a top speed record with likes of the Bugatti Chiron SS 300+ and the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, but it still no slouch.
Compared to the aforementioned hypercars, the Speedtail seems rather tame with its 250 mph top speed. It still is pretty quick and I don’t see any customer getting anywhere close to that figure. So, McLaren thought it would be a good idea to demonstrate how fast the Speedtail can actually go.
To achieve speeds in excess of 250 mph, you need a really long runway, preferably without commercial jets landing and taking off at regular intervals. McLaren found one down in Florida that was perfect to let the hypercar stretch its legs.
Now, the car is designed to be as slice through air without generating too much drag. The flowing lines and elongated tail section are just a part of its complex aerodynamics package. At it’s heart is a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 hybrid power unit that produces 1050 hp. The internal combustion engine alone put out 757 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, while the electric motor is rated at 312 hp. The compact battery pack has a capacity of 1.6 kWh.
